The Mechanic's Workshop: Daily Achievements and Why they Matter

We've had about two weeks of the new daily achievement system and I think it’s time to stop and reflect on how they are going, and if ArenaNet achieved (pun) what they could have with the changes. To do that I’ll dive into my own experience with the current system, as well as look ahead to the changes they've already confirmed for February patch.
The Past
It’s important to not forget where you came from. With that in mind, we should start this discussion was a reflection on the previous system. The old system (in case any of you are blocking the memories) was the same each day. Kill 15 different enemies, Kill 100 enemies, Gather 25 items, Complete 5 events. Very generic and after about a two days of doing them I was bored of them. I appreciate the fact that they have to be generic so that certain players aren't excluded, but they grew thin quickly.
I think what most players ended up doing was parking alts at hotspots around Tyria. Especially for events and kill variety goals. Since the achievements are account wide, parking an alt near the Gendarren Fields Arena was a quick way to get kill variety (and events). And there are a few event hotspots on the map you could park characters at for easy credit. I think the community was in unison (for once) that the old system was rather flat. guild wars 2 gold

The Present
As of the last monthly patch, we all have gotten to (mostly) enjoy the new system. I've spent some previous workshops beating up ArenaNet, but quite frankly the new system is well done, if a bit unfinished. And unlike some of their other unfinished updates, this one isn't detrimental to the game in its current state, and still provides a huge improvement over the previous system. In programming terms the current daily system seems to be the MVP (minimally viable product), and nothing near fully featured.
The new system includes a rotating list of achievement categories, of which a player must complete all of them in order to get credit for the total daily achievement. The list isn't very long (and has already been trimmed because one of the categories wasn't working).
Kills (combo finisher) - Already cut from game
I think of the list, it’s clear a few are easier than others. Certain ones like “Daily Healer” require players to purposefully suck at events just so the NPC's will die (Daily Healer also happens to be the worst named achievement ever. At first I thought I had to, I dunno, heal other players. That would have been really cool. But no, I have to res stupid NPC’s after I watch them die. Silly). As cool as it is to teach players they can res other players and npc's the practical nature of completing this achievement ruins any potential good it could have done for the community. acheter des kamas sur dofus
Some of the current ones really get me excited though. Aquatic kills gives players a reason to dive into the depths of Tyria. Dodges are dragging players kicking and screaming into the way Guild Wars 2 does combat. Even Daily Crafter is nice because it rewards what is normally a pretty easy to forget about part of the game.
It’s also clear from the two weeks this system has been in place that it’s not near big enough to keep me interested for more than a few more weeks. I have friends who are already parking characters underwater for the days it matters. I think we may see a few more before the next patch, but it’s probably safe to assume they won’t be groundbreaking. ArenaNet already confirmed that until players can chose the achievements they want we won’t see anything that they feel certain players won't like.
The Future
That brings me to why I'm so excited for the February patch. The ability for ArenaNet to give us a list of 6 categories and allow players to complete any 4 means they can start being incredibly creative. Some things they've hinted at include jumping puzzle achievements. They already did this with the monthly achievement and I think it caused a stir. ArenaNet knows the jumping puzzles are some of the more unique content in the game, and getting to highlight it is something they have wanted to do for a long time.
What the future of dailies should look like is ArenaNet getting to highlight areas of the game that are being under appreciated. They can make achievements for killing a dragon. Imagine the rush on Spark fly fen, Frost gorge, and Blazeridge. What about a daily achievement for killing Centaurs. Imagine the rush on Kryta. ArenaNet is already using living story to get players into the same zones, the daily system will ensure they can do this every day for the life of the game.
The biggest thing I've missed since launch is that feeling that other players are always around me in PvE. After leveling a few alts through some of the sparser populated zones and just not enjoying myself as much as I did when other players were around to spontaneously help with events. Even with the limited daily system current in place i've seen an increase in player mobility in the world. There is quite simply more reasons to be more places. Part of this ties into the rescaled loot tables and living story, but I think the dailies play a part in that as well.
I think it’s clear that ArenaNet is actively trying to find ways to bring players in PvE together. The future of the daily system will be crucial to ensuring that players are brought together naturally around content in the world. It will also create a platform that ArenaNet can use to shepherd players towards areas of the game that are being neglected. Creating a smart and dynamic daily system is one huge step in the right direction, and one I can’t wait to see more of.

Wings Over Atreia: Laying the smackdown on RMT in Aion

Sports don't have a monopoly on pregame rituals. I know for a fact some folks have their own sets of customary actions that are performed before logging into Aion. These routines are as varied as the players themselves; some may grab a drink or snacks before settling in, while others may put on their lucky PvP socks. I'm acquainted with at least a few people who lock the door to keep pesky interruptions (i.e., roomies) from dog piling on them. Me? Well, I'd like to say I have a cool routine, but I don't... yet! As much as I can understand and even encourage a wide array of gaming rituals, this particular one really needs to go. But it's out of our hands; in order for it to happen, kinah-selling must be seriously curtailed in Aion. Some players have questioned whether NCsoft even cares about the kinah-selling problem. I think the answer to that came in the studio's announcement this past week. In a bold new move in the fight against illicit RMT, NCsoft is poised to piledrive the kinah-selling population.

Guild Wars 2: Throw Your Hands in the Air
It's time to celebrate as guesting is confirmed for January(1)
Plenty of beaming smiles can be seen in Tyria today as ArenaNet confirmed that guesting will be available in Guild Wars 2 on January 28.buy gw2 gold
Martin Kerstein unveiled the happy news in a blog post today which outlines how guesting will work while confirming the end of free transfers.(2)
The community had been wondering how ArenaNet would avoid the exploitation of guesting due to being able to hop across servers and vacuum up Orichalcum nodes or run strings of world boss events to farm exotics.
To counter this, guesting can only occur on two worlds at a time with a 24 hour cooldown. It was also confirmed that there will not be guesting across different regions, so no trips from the EU to US on a daily basis. This has raised disappointment among a number of players leading Kerstein to quickly respond with an explanation of why it isn't viable. buy guild wars 2 gold
Transfers will require payment from the 28th, with the gem cost varying depending on the server population. Transfers will retain a one week lock-in to avoid WvW cherry picking.

Announcement: Global Rules
Global Rules of Runescape Community
The following are the rules which govern all areas of Runescape Community. Please review these Rules prior to posting as ignorance of our policies will not exempt you from the consequences of your actions. Please also review any and all stickied rules in each forum prior to posting as some forums have rules which differ from other areas of the site.
Individuals who break these rules will receive either a warning, a Rating deduction, a suspension ranging from three days to three weeks AND a Rating deduction or an automatic ban. Bans are not temporary; bans are permanent unless appealed. Please note that if you disagree with any action taken against you at RSC, you do have the right to appeal it by sending a Private Message to any Admin (Senior Moderator or King) or through our Rants Forum. All decisions made by Admin are final.
RSC Accounts
1. Do not create more than one account on RSC. Secondary accounts will be banned. Accounts created to circumvent a ban or suspension will be banned and the original account will be banned as well. If you and other members of your immediate family have separate accounts, please inform a Senior Moderator of this so we can note your account.
2. Do not use your account for the purposes of advertising another site. Accounts created to strictly advertise will be banned. We do allow advertisements for Clan members attempting to recruit individuals into their Clan. However, a clear link back to Zybez or RSC is required.
3. Do not use your account to post objectionable material on this site. Objectionable material includes, but is not limited to: pornography, violent or graphic images, racist posts or images or links to download sites (which could potentially contain viruses or keyloggers). Accounts which make these type of posts or topics will be banned. This includes avatars, signatures and also your profile page.
4. Do not use your account to promote any type of illegal Runescape related activity. This includes, but is not limited to: account trading, account buying or selling, account sharing, claiming to be able to give free membership or Player or Jagex Moderator status, promoting or using any type of botting or autoing program or any type of Runescape password/Bank PIN scams and the advertising or encouragement of private servers. Accounts which make these type of posts or topics will be banned. While our Rules mirrors those of Runescape, our Rules will always take precedent over RuneScape's rules.
5. Do not use your account to claim that you are someone that you are not (impersonation) or post information which was not written by you (plagiarism). If you are accused of impersonation or plagiarism, you will be required to prove that you are who you say you are. Failure to provide proof will result in either a suspension or a ban.
6. Do not use your account to make threats against the security of this website or any of its users. Individuals who willingly threaten another user will be either suspended or banned, based on the severity of the threats. Individuals who willingly threaten the security of RSC or Zybez will be banned.
Common Courtesy
1. Treat all other users and RSC Staff civilly. Individuals who flame other users through posts, topics, signatures, avatars, private messages or their profile page will have the offending comment deleted and action may be taken against their account. It is the Moderator's discretion on whether you will be suspended for your comment(s).
2. Please respect decisions made by any Staff member. If your account is edited, such as the removal of your signature or avatar due to offending material, and that image is replaced; you will be suspended. Remember, you do have the right to appeal any action taken against your account here at RSC through our Rants Forum.
3. Do not evade the language filter on our site. Individuals who circumvent the language filter will be suspended. The language of the forums is English. Non-English posts will be deleted.
4. Please avoid spamming our site by either posting abbreviated comments (lol, nice, 10/10, inb4lock), double posting or posting bump to bump a topic to the top of the forum. Spammy comments will normally be deleted, persistent spamming will result in a suspension. Individuals who intentionally spam in order to reach the 50 posts required for certain forums will be suspended and their post count edited to zero posts.
5. Please do not create topics directed towards one individual or a certain group of people. Instead, please use the Private Message system to direct your comments directly to the people who wish to speak with. Topics intended for certain people and not the Community will be deleted. People who make negative public comments regarding actions taken against them by Moderators who are enforcing our Rules will be suspended. Please appeal all actions in private through our Private Message system to a Senior Moderator or use our Rants Forum to inform Admin your grievances in private.
6. Please do not post introductory topics. We are glad that you are here but people will notice you more if you post constructively and intelligently. Introductory topics will be locked.
7. Please do not encourage others to violate our rules.
Ratings
Below your avatar is a Rating number which ranges begins at zero and can either increase or decrease to 5 or -5, respectively. Individuals who post well, display intelligence and/or take the initiative to improve RSC or Zybez will normally receive a positive Rating point. People with positive Ratings will be considered for promotions more than individuals who post averagely or poorly.
People who break the rules will receive a negative Rating point. If the deduction brings your Rating into the negative, you will be suspended for a set period of time. The length of suspension are as follows:
-1: Three day suspension
-2: One week suspension
-3: Two week suspension(*)
-4: Three week suspension
-5: Permanent ban
- Senior Moderators and Kings may, at their discretion, immediately ban an individual who has reached -3 or -4 Rating if the user is pervasive in their Rule breaking.
These time-frames for suspensions is our standard scale. However, judging on the severity of the infraction, the length of suspension may be increased or decreased. Any adjustment to the length of suspension will go through a Senior Moderator or King and you will receive a Private Message informing you of the variance.
Ban Appeals
You are allowed, after a period of time, to make a formal request to be unbanned if you are currently banned. Please go to the Ban Appeals forum [visible only to banned users] to appeal. Be certain to include the circumstances behind your ban (if known) and any pertinent information which you wish to provide to support your request to be unbanned. Please note that you must wait three months after your ban date to be allowed to appeal. Individuals who are found evading a ban will not be allowed to appeal.
